Kerala School Kalotsavam 2012

I am going to be busy with the duties in the kerala school kalotsavam which is going to be held at Thrissur. Kalotsavams always attracted me for its colours and enthusiasm of the participants and teachers. It always motivated me to prepare myself and my students for the competitions.
Now I am very sad to realise that most of the students and teachers are away from it. It fails to attract the audience.
I think art and art forms are the reflection of the mind of the then society. Now the society wants different or it behaves indifferently.
Whatever it is, we need to bring the warmth and freshness of Kalotsavam by taking our students back in the Kalotsavam.
I hope the coming Kalotsavam would be a great success.

Anna Hazare- Reality or Myth

Anna Hazare, the gandhian made the government of India bow before the strength of the people. Democracy in its real form is the government of the people not for a few. The government not realized the fact. They attacked everything and anything which came in their way.
Hazare is only a symbol which stands for the people's fight against corruption and nepotism. There is no need to project Hazare as the savior of Indian democracy but only a catalyst which can evoke the conscience of Indian democratic mind.

Memoir of a beautiful journey - "Moments with Sagarrani"

An excursion is always an enjoyable experience to man. If it is a staff tour definitely the enjoyment will be double. It gives an opportunity for the entire staff of an organization to travel together and enjoy the little time forgetting the stress and strain of their daily life. Some people believe that it will improve the relationship between the colleagues and it gives an opportunity to know their family. But whatever it is, one thing is quite clear “Staff tour is always a good idea”.

Yesterday I got an opportunity to be a part of a staff tour. It was conducted to the staff of C.M.Govt.HSS Kuttur, Thrissur. I was invited to the tour only because the staff loves me that much. I was with them for three years from 2006 to 2009. I had a little hesitation in the beginning to accept the invitation but at last I decided to join with them in their happy moments.

It was a memorable journey to Kochi, the Queen of Arabian Sea. The main attraction of the trip was the cruise in the Sagarrani ship, run by the Inland water transport corporation of Kerala government. It was a nice experience to everyone because majority of the people were traveling in a ship for the first time. Narration, food, music and dance, everything gave something to everyone to remember something in the future. In the return journey we went to Vallarpadam Church and Cherai Beach. Every moment was giving something to me for cherishing in the days coming . In the journey I recollected those faces, which were not with us in this journey. Some were retired from service and some were absent due to some reasons. But I was really missing them especially the former HM Usha teacher, Sarojini teacher etc.

Most valuable for me were those moments which I had with my past colleagues. The moments with Biju master, Murali master, Resmi teacher, Girijakshan master, Aniyan master and the others were really valuable to me. I got an impression that I returned in the olden wooden bench in the staff room of Kuttur school.

In the end of the journey I could only express my thanks to my friends and Sagarrani for giving something memorable for the days to come.

Importance of Vastu Vidya (Article)

INTRODUCTION

Man has no separated life. The life of all flora and fauna is totally inter related. According to sacred books of Vedas, "Yatra Viswam Bhavathyeka Needam" i.e. this universe is situated as a bird nest. The exceptional universal outlook of Vasthu Vidya is derived from the Theory of Advaitha. This thought will elevate our mind beyond the modern Chaos Theory and Uncertainty Theory.

Today is an age of specialization and architecture has metamorphosised into several disciplines. This has resulted into fragmented approach and disruption of age-old traditions; the insular thinking is due to present changing socio-cultural structure-from rural to urban, from social to economic and from community to individualistic. Architecture has, usually, not been able to recognize the social, economic, environmental and other changes that are taking place in the country. There is a widespread restlessness and lack of psychological fulfillment, in spite of higher level of physical comfort. The people are searching for alternatives to these problems in a rather simple manner and adopting geometric patterns and codes of the so-called Science of Vasthu. However, due to the growing awareness, it has other side also. Architecture is in the process of precipitation and there is a strong urge to relate architecture to metaphysical and psychic experience. With the renewed interest in heritage of Science of Vasthu, the scholars and architects are studying and exploring the traditional Indian literature.

VASTU VIDYA

Vastu vidya is the knowledge evolved as a result of our unrelenting enquiry into the need of planning and constructing habitats. Although the term Vastu vidya is a common term for the most of the population, much of the basic concepts of it are shrouded in mystery and perhaps lie hidden in the complicated terminologies and practices of architecture.

In the context of modern times with varied building requirements, vast developments in materials, techniques and in the changing socio cultural values the rigid canonical approach of vastu vidya may appear impractical and outdated. But an enquiry of this ancient science will help us to get an insight into the development of this ancient architecture and possibly integrate this traditionally evolved system with the present day practice.

The word "vastu" means the physical environment and the term "vidya" means knowledge. So, in a simplified form, vastu vidya means the knowledge of the physical environment around us.

Vastu is one of the oldest forms of architectural science. It dates back thousands of years to the Vedic ages. The main function of vastu is to ensure the harmonious balance of the five basic elements within an enclosed space. The five basic elements are Earth, Fire, Wind, Sky and Water. According to the tenets of vastu, if these five elements are in balance, then the people living and working in those spaces will have a balanced life as well.

The sages in ancient times set down very specific rules and regulations concerning each and every aspect of architecture. From the buying of the land to the actual construction - there are guidelines for it all. In the old days, builders and architects were expected to follow all the rules of vastu to build structures that were free of any negative energy.

The main principle of vastu is to maintain a balanced union with the nature around us. According to vastu, there are positive and negative energies all over the earth. These energies are constantly interconnecting with each other and for a balance to be maintained, they have to be evenly distributed.

In the modern age, we are slowly beginning to realise that there is a close connection between our environment and our physical, mental and spiritual health. We are constantly stressed out because of the enormous amount of pressure that we are faced with - at home, in office or in everyday routine life. To combat this stress, the vastu principles can be applied to our home or office. It will be useful to know the history of vastu vidya with the principles of vastu for a better understanding of it.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF VASTU VIDYA

Vastu vidya, the ancient architectural science, was first mentioned in the Indian holy texts called The Vedas. More specifically, it was mentioned in the Stapatya Veda, which is a part of the Atharva Veda. The Vedas are more than five thousand years old. The sages in those times plotted the course of the sun and set down rules that governed each and every aspect of building temples and royal palaces. It was only later that these rules grew to encompass buildings of every kind.

The word vastu is derived from the word vastoshpati which is found in the Rig Veda. This concept is aimed at the preserving the happiness, health and prosperity of human beings in this life and the afterlife. Vastu also believes in the existence of the Vastu Purush, the god who resides in all buildings. The main function of vastu is to maintain the balance that we have with everything around us.

The science of vastu spread to other parts of Asia, including Japan where it became the basis for the development of Feng Shui. In India, proof of the existence of vastu can be found in many sacred texts and epics. The Ramayana and Mahabharata mention buildings that were constructed according to vastu principles. Vastu was also used for the buildings in the Indus Valley Civilization. Excavations at Harappa and Mohenjadaro are proof of this.

The first official thesis on Vastu was written by the sage Kasyapa. It was called the Kasyapa Silpa. A dissertation called the Agama Shastra talks about how vastu can be used for any type of construction. Vastu shastra, being a technical science, was initially taught only to architects. The architects passed the knowledge through the generations verbally and by written monographs.

Ancient Buddhist texts also mention vastu. In fact, Lord Buddha talks about how overseeing the work on the construction of a building is one of the duties of a monk. Monasteries, multi storey buildings, workplaces and residences were built using vastu principles.

Apart from the solar movements, vastu also places importance on the eight directions and the five basic elements. The directions are north, south, east, west, north-west, north-east, south-west and south-east. The elements are earth, wind, fire, water and sky. Vastu believes that if there is a balance between all these elements, then we will have a happy and prosperous life. The balance in our outer surroundings will bring balance to our inner selves.

ECO FRIENDLY ARCHITECTURE


Vasthu Vidya is relying out and out on the eco-friendly bio-human methods. It prefers human experience to mechanical engineering when it begins by checking the soil, simply by tasting it. It will convince you that water is but the blood of earth. Like the blood circulating through nerves lying downwards and upwards in parts of the human body, the water circulating through the internal nerves of the earth. Here the earth is not an object of consuming; but a pulsating life!

Vasthu Vidya suggests various eco friendly building materials. It rejects the terrible and harmful 'concrete culture'. Vasthu Vidya pleads for diversity in this matter according to geographical peculiarities of plots. Vasthu Vidya insists on land fertility and environmental pleasure. 'Green Belt' is a modern idea in European thought; but it has been practicing for centuries by Vasthu Vidya. There is a concept of planting the Tamarind Tree in the south direction of the house. So, that it checks and absorbs the strong flow of solar wind. Some new Indian studies have also proved the scientific basis of this outlook. This is the time of terrible environmental pollution. There is hole appears in the ozone layer, which helps the earth to protect it from the dangerous rays of the sun. Here Vasthu Vidya shows a path of salvation.


VASTU AND SCIENCE

Vastu is the scientific study Of directions, which aims at utilizing the natural energies that are available free of cost, for the benefit of humans, by creating an equilibrium between man and material. As a science, it extracts the positive energy from the natural elements of the universe - the panchbhootas, namely, earth, water, air, sun and sky. It all these five elements, for creating a congenial setting or a place to live or work in, in most the scientific way, exploiting the benefits bestowed by the five basic elements. The equilibrium in nature can be easily seen among all the moving bodies by the human beings, but unfortunately they are unable to see such equilibrium in a static body. Vastu shastra aims at guiding construction in such a way that establishes the equilibrium, so that there is no hindrance to the flow of magnetic waves, from the North Pole to South Pole. It is believed that creating such a balance helps people avoid various calamities, diseases, accidents, etc, which might have occurred otherwise. Vastu is an old practice that was evolved by learned men of the past, for the welfare of mankind. It is a vast field of study that lays down certain principles, paving way for good health, wealth and prosperity to enter our house. The principles of Vastu, which were laid down in the ancient times, are purely based on the effect of sunrays during different times of the day. They continue to be used by people till date, while undertaking any form of construction, to keep everything in equilibrium.

The theories of vastu have also been scientifically proven. We know now that the earth's magnetic poles have an influence on us. We also know that there is something called the Natural Law which is responsible for all life in the universe. Vastu complies with all these theories. It ensures that our houses and offices are built in such a way that we make the best of all the positive energies present around us and reduces our exposure to negative energies.

Vastu principles are based on the theories of electromagnetism. The amazing thing is that these principles were developed thousands of years before electromagnetism was discovered!

Apart from noise, water and air, electromagnetism is another pollutant in our environment. None of us can really escape from it. Vastu plays an important role by using space to decrease our exposure to this magnetism. More space helps in reducing electromagnetism. Emphasis is also placed on the different directions and the five main elements of earth, water, air, fire and sky.

The wise men in ancient times studied the movements of the sun and laid down very specific rules regarding the construction of any structure. The eight directions - north, south, east, west, north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west, are very important in vastu.

The principles of vastu are also based on the balance of the five basic elements - earth, sky, water, fire and wind. Earth symbolizes the stability of the mind and body. Fire symbolizes energy. Water symbolizes purity. Air symbolizes movement and space represents creativity.

As modern researchers dug deep into the theory of the Unified Field of Natural Law, they found that vastu is in complete accordance with the Natural Law. This Law is the intelligence that guides the evolution of every single atom in the universe. It is the architect of all life in the universe. Vastu is a natural extension of this Law. It helps support Natural Law and enables us to have a better quality of life.

Three Roses

(One act Play)

Setting: Class room

A bench and desk are seen at the left side of the stage. Two girls seen sitting on the bench happily. Another girl comes from left.

Girl: Excuse me. Is it Plus one Science class?

1 Girl : Yes. It is.

Girl: Hai, I’m Sophie. I’m the new admission in the class.

1 Girl: Nice to meet you. I’m Vaheeda and this is my friend Veena.

Veena: Hai Sophie nice to meet you.

Teacher comes in to the class-Students move to their seats

Students: Good morning teacher.

Teacher: Good morning. My name is Raji. I’ll be your class teacher for this year. I teach English to you. Feel free to tell any thing. Ok

Shall we begin our class?

Students: Yes teacher.

Teacher: Then all of you please take your text book. Today we are going to learn a new story.

Scene 2

Setting : Class room

Students come in to the class

Sophie: Hey friends. Did any one rag you yesterday?

Vaheeda: Yes, the seniors came and told me to sing a song in English loudly.

Sophie: Then what you did?

Vaheeda: I sang a song.

Sophie: You should complain to the principal.

Vaheeda: There is no need of that. I think it’s a normal thing. My father told me that when he was in the college he used to rag the juniors. It’s a usual practice in the colleges.

Veena: We can enjoy some of the jokes but when it crosses the limit. I think we should object that.

Vaheeda: Just leave it. It will make things worse.

Teacher comes into the class

Students: Good morning teacher.

Teacher: Good morning. Have you done your home work.

Students: Yes teacher.

Scene:3

Class room

All the three girls come into the class.

Veena: Did you notice, that tall boy in the plus two took our photo in his mobile. We should complain to the principal now itself.

Vaheeda: I didn’t see that. Nothing would happen. What would they do with our photo?

You unnecessarily creating problems.

Sophie: I don’t know what to do. I too don’t want to make a problem.

Scene: 4

Setting: Garden

Veena is seen crying on a bench- Vaheeda and Sophie come near to her.

Vaheeda: What’s wrong with you? Why are you crying?

Sophie: Hey what happened?

Veena: Yesterday I told you that boy in the plus two classes took our photo in his mobile. Today he showed some pictures to me.

Vaheeda: whose pictures?

Veena: That was obscene pictures of girls.

Sophie: What?

Veena: They have our face

Sophie: He might have edited our picture through morphing? What should we don now?

Vaheeda: Should we complain to the Principal?

Veena: No. He warned me that if we complain he will send the picture to every one through blue tooth or internet.

Sophie: Then what should we do?

Vaheeda: Then, it is better we should talk to them directly.

Sophie: That’s a good idea.

Scene 5

Veena is seen sitting on the bench. Vaheeda and sophie come there with crying faces.

Veena: What happened? What they said?

Vaheeda: They are too bad. They told us to go with them tomorrow to a place.

Veena: What?

Sophie: Yes. They said it. If we disobeyed, they will definitely upload our picture to internet.

Veena: How can I go to my home? My parents have a lot of dreams on me. When they hear about it, they would kill themselves. I can’t see that.

Sophie: I cannot face my parents as well.

Vaheeda: I too can’t face it. What should we do then?

Veena: It’s better to die than living like that.

Sophie: Why shouldn’t we do that? Yes we could die together.

Veen, Vaheeda: Yes, We agree that.

Scene 6

Setting class room

Three girls seen sitting on a bench embracing each other. Three cool drink bottles seen on the desk

Vaheeda: This is our last moment. We mixed the rat poison in that cool drink bottles. Now it’s the time for us to say good bye to this world.

Veena: I just want to escape from this cruel world.

Sophie: Are you ready to die?

Veena, Vaheeda: Yes

They take the bottles and drink the cool drink painfully.

They show the pain on their face and fall on the ground, groan….grunt ….. and finally lay down still.

(One act Play)




{Setting: A bedroom. A Computer table and two chairs are seen at the right side of the room. There is study table at the left side of the room, on it some text books and English magazines lying carelessly. A cot is seen at the middle of the room}

When the curtain rises Manu is seen enjoying music on his head phone. He walks in the room casually enjoying the music (rap music in the background). While he continues his music a calling bell is heard in the background. He doesn’t hear it in the first time. Bell repeats twice.

Johny: Hey, Manu. Where are you? Manu, Manu

Manu: (taking his head phone) Hey. Who’s that?

Johny: Hey Manu, I’m Johny.

Manu: Johny! Get in. The door is open.

Manu: (warmly welcomes and hugs) Hello Johny, How are you?

Johny: I’m fine yaar. (Looking around doubtfully) Where’s your mother?

Manu: She has gone to Office.

Johny: Your father?

Manu: He has gone for a business tour.

Johny: Oh! Thank god. (He takes a CD packet from his pocket, gives it to Manu).

Manu: How was it?

Johny: Wow! I couldn’t sleep last night. (He moves to the computer) Hey, Manu. Have you got any new Games?

Manu: Yes, I’ve got a new one.

Johny: How is it?

Manu: It’s really amazing. You know it’s a war game. Killing……Killing…… You’ll like it. I’ll show you. (He moves to the computer)

Manu: (operating the computer. Sound of the game is seen in the background) How is it?

Johny: (Excitingly) Yes, Kill him. Yes kill the other. Take the automatic gun. Yes, you did it. (He claps his hands excitingly. Manu smiles at him and continues his game)

Manu: (Excitingly rises his hand in the air) Yes. I’ve won the game.

(Manu walks from the seat to the centre)

Johny: Manu. You are simply great. How skillfully you play these games. I’m really jealous of you.

Manu: (Smiling) there’s nothing great Johny. It’s only taste and practice.

Johny: I really like to play these kinds of thrillers. I love the killings and blood.

Manu: (Smiling) Hey. I’ve a clipping of a real murder. Do you want to see it?

Johny: (Excitingly) yes, where did you get that?

Manu: I downloaded it from internet.

(Manu goes back to the computer and works in it)

Manu: Look at it. How they cut his head. Look at the blood.

Johny: (Looks at it interestingly) Wow! It’s beautiful.

(Calling bell in the background)

Manu: (Loudly) who’s there? (Johny goes to the door)

Johny: It’s Rahul and Kiran.

Manu: Welcome you guys. We’re waiting for you. You people come at the right time.

Johny: Let’s finish the clipping. (Manu continues his work on the computer. Everyone looks on the monitor)

Rahul: (Shockingly) what’s this?

Johny: The real killing! (Smiles) Manu, Please play it again.

Kiran: What are they doing? (Doubtfully)

Johny: Don’t talk, just watch it.

Rahul: O God! They are cutting his head. (Moves away from the computer)

Johny: (Excitingly) I haven’t seen such a clipping in my life.

Rahul: I don’t like these clipping.

Manu: (To Johny) I have another clipping. Do you want to see it?

Johny: I love it. What’s that?

Manu: It’s a real rape scene.

Rahul: (Angrily) stop it! Don’t see such things. It’ll spoil you.

Johny: I’m really excited. Don’t listen to him.

Kiran: Hay friends! Have you done your Physics assignment?

Johny: You stupid! You spoiled my mood. (Moves away from the table)

Manu: (With desperation) yes, you spoiled mine too.

(Everyone moves to the centre and sits on the cot)

Johny: (Moves forward) Hey! Have you done your impositions?

Manu: Oh! I hate Physics.

Kiran: I hate that teacher. She always scolds me. Sometimes for nothing.

Johny: If we don’t complete the assignment and impositions, she will throw us from the class. That’s sure.

Manu: What do we do now?

Johny: I’ll kill the bitch.

Rahul: (Painfully) don’t call our teacher like that.

Kiran: Oh! It hurts him. He is her pet.

Rahul: Yes, I like her, she is a good teacher.

Johny: Do something to drive her away from our school. I just don’t want to see her face any more.

Manu: Yes! I’ve a plan. (Calls everyone to the computer) Now you’ll salute me for this.

Kiran: Who’s this? (Smiles)

Johny: It’s her, the Physics monkey.

Rahul: How did you get this?

Manu: At the time of Onam vacation, I took her photo in my mobile.

Johny: What are you going to do with this?

Manu: I’m going to morph her picture with a nude picture of a model. (With a smile) Look at it. How is it?

Kiran: It looks really nice. What do we do now?

Manu: Now I’m going to upload this picture with a hot story into a very hot web site.

Johny: That means we are going to make her popular from today. (Smiles)

Rahul: Don’t do that. I won’t allow you to do it. Manu, Hey don’t do it. She is our teacher. It will spoil her career and family. Don’t do that.

(Rahul pulls Manu from his seat. Johny slaps on his face. Rahul pulls Johny and disturbs Manu. Johny hits him hard, but he awakes from there and disturbs others.)

Johny: Hey, Rahul don’t disturb us. I’ll kill you.

(Rahul disturbs others. Everyone comes at Rahul, forcing him down and kicking him with their legs and arms. Pause. Rahul and Johny move to the computer)

Kiran: (Taking the face of Rahul in his hand) Rahul. Rahul…………. (Shockingly puts it down) Oh my god.

Manu, Johny. Oh! What we did? I think he is dead.

(Manu and Johny come near to Rahul. They also call him)

Johny: (Shockingly) yes, he is dead. (All run away from the room with fear)
